What is the CMR Convention?

The CMR (Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road) regulates carrier liability in international road transport between participating countries. Slovenia is one of them.

In simple terms, CMR defines:

  • when the carrier is liable for damage,
  • the amount of compensation the carrier must pay.


Carrier Liability Limitation

Under CMR, the carrier is liable only up to 8.33 SDR (Special Drawing Rights) per kilogram of lost or damaged goods. SDR is an international monetary unit – currently equivalent to about 10–11 EUR per kg.

🔍 Example:
If your cargo is worth €10,000 and weighs 400 kg, the maximum compensation will be around €4,000. The rest is your risk – not the carrier’s.
